Recommended for these conditions
Every seasoned fishkeeper learns the same lesson: the cheapest cure is isolation. Quarantine Tank Divider gives you a controlled space to treat sick fish without risking the whole system.
Where it really pays for itself is prevents cross-contamination between fish during treatment. That is the exact failure point behind several of the conditions in our library, so addressing it directly shortens treatment time and cuts re-infection.
How to use it well
Low cost add-on; good bundle item with hospital tank. Treat it as part of a protocol rather than a magic bullet — it works best alongside good husbandry and the medications matched to your specific diagnosis.

Care & Usage Tips
Setup & Sizing
- Measure precisely — a loose-fitting divider defeats the purpose
A divider that doesn’t create a full seal allows fish to pass between sections or allows pathogens to cross in shared water. Measure your tank interior width and height and cut or order the divider to within 1/8 inch (3 mm) of a snug fit. - Use solid, non-porous material for disease isolation
Mesh or egg-crate dividers allow water — and waterborne pathogens — to circulate freely between sections. For disease isolation, use solid acrylic or PVC sheeting. Egg-crate is fine only for separating aggressive fish, not for quarantine. - Run separate filtration on each side if possible
If the divider creates two water-separated zones, each zone needs its own biological filtration. A single filter drawing from one side and returning to the other crosses contamination. Two sponge filters, one per zone, is the cleanest solution. - Seal the edges with aquarium-safe foam weatherstripping
Press-fit dividers in glass tanks rarely achieve a true seal on the first try. A bead of aquarium-safe foam tape along the edges eliminates gaps without requiring silicone that would complicate removal and cleaning. - Label each side and track parameters independently
In a split quarantine setup, disease-side water chemistry often diverges from the clean side due to medication and ammonia load. Test each side separately and log parameters to avoid confusing readings.
Safe Use & Sanitation
- Never reuse a divider without disinfection
Even solid dividers harbor pathogens in micro-scratches on their surface. After each quarantine cycle, soak the divider in a 10% bleach solution for 20 minutes, rinse thoroughly, and treat with dechlorinator before reinstalling. - Check the seal daily — fish are surprisingly strong
A fish that wants out of quarantine will push against a divider repeatedly, eventually creating a gap. Inspect the divider’s edge seal every morning during active quarantine. - Do not use during active Ich treatment with trophonts present
If cysts from the main tank side are already in the substrate or décor, a divider creates a false sense of security. Physical separation is only meaningful when the disease has been fully cleared from both sides of the environment. - Keep an acrylic-safe cleaner on hand
Acrylic scratches easily with standard aquarium scrapers, creating microscopic grooves that harbor biofilm. Use an acrylic-safe pad and an aquarium-safe acrylic polish for minor scratches after each use. - Replace after every 5–8 heavy-use cycles
PVC and acrylic become micro-porous after repeated chemical exposure. Even thorough bleaching eventually fails to reach all surfaces. A new divider every 6–8 quarantine cycles is cheap insurance.
