Ozone Generator
Ozone Generator — helps with bacteria, water clarity, pathogen control.
- Solves
- Bacteria, water clarity, pathogen control
- Best for
- Reef tanks, commercial aquaculture
- Price range
- $80–$500
Recommended for these conditions
Pathogens that ride in on new fish or bloom in warm water are the reason most outbreaks start. Ozone Generator attacks the problem at its source — the water column itself.
Where it really pays for itself is bacteria, water clarity, pathogen control. That is the exact failure point behind several of the conditions in our library, so addressing it directly shortens treatment time and cuts re-infection.
How to use it well
Powerful oxidizer; use with ORP controller for safe levels. Treat it as part of a protocol rather than a magic bullet — it works best alongside good husbandry and the medications matched to your specific diagnosis.
Conditions it helps with
On our disease pages you’ll see this equipment recommended for conditions such as:
- Columnaris
- Aeromonas
- Streptococcosis
Who it’s for

Care & Usage Tips
Setting Up Your Ozone Generator
- Always pair with an ORP (redox) controller
Ozone is effective between 300–400 mV ORP in a reef tank; above 450 mV it damages gill tissue and kills invertebrates. Never run an ozone generator uncontrolled — an ORP probe and controller are non-negotiable safety equipment, not optional accessories. - Route ozone output through a contact chamber or protein skimmer
Direct injection into the sump without a reaction chamber allows undissolved ozone to off-gas into the room. Ozone at 0.1 ppm in air is detectable as an acrid smell; at 0.3 ppm it irritates eyes and lungs. (Ref: OSHA PEL for ozone: 0.1 ppm, 8-hr TWA) - Use an activated carbon effluent filter
All water leaving the ozonated section must pass through activated carbon to destroy residual ozone before it reaches fish. A simple carbon-packed canister or media bag in the return line is sufficient and mandatory. - Install the unit in a ventilated area
Even a properly functioning ozone generator will off-gas trace amounts during normal operation. Mount it in an area with good air exchange — never inside a closed cabinet without ventilation holes. - Start at the lowest output setting
Commission ozone gradually. Begin at 25% of the unit’s rated output and monitor ORP daily for one week before increasing. This gives beneficial bacteria time to adapt and prevents a sudden oxidative crash of your biological filter.
Safe Operation & Maintenance
- Check the ORP probe calibration monthly
ORP probes drift over time. Calibrate using a standard ORP buffer solution monthly. An uncalibrated probe can read 50–80 mV off, potentially letting ozone levels climb into dangerous territory undetected. - Inspect air inlet tubing for blockages quarterly
Most ozone generators pull ambient air through a desiccant dryer. If the desiccant becomes saturated, humid air entering the corona discharge cell produces nitric acid, which corrodes the cell and shortens its lifespan dramatically. - Replace desiccant beads when they turn pink
Blue silica gel desiccant turns pink when saturated. Replace it immediately — wet air in the ozone cell reduces output efficiency by up to 60% and accelerates cell corrosion. Bake spent beads at 250°F (120°C) for 2 hours to regenerate them. - Never turn off the carbon filter while ozone is running
Even 10 minutes of bypass allows residual ozone to reach fish and invertebrates, causing acute respiratory distress. This is easy to miss during water changes or filter maintenance — confirm carbon is active before any ozone session. - Keep fish room humidity in check
High ambient humidity reduces ozone output from corona discharge units and accelerates corrosion of electrical components. Use a dehumidifier if your fish room regularly exceeds 70% relative humidity.
